Wyoming Wrestling: Record Crowd Cheers on Cowboys in Tough Battle Against No. 1 Penn State (2026)

Talk about a night to remember! The University of Wyoming wrestling team faced off against the formidable No. 1 Penn State, and the atmosphere inside the Arena-Auditorium was electric. A record-breaking crowd of 4,686 fans packed the stands, creating an unforgettable experience, even amidst a challenging 40-7 loss for the Cowboys.

"That whole dual, no matter the score in any match, the fans were screaming, and they showed out," said Joey Novak, capturing the essence of the night. "That might be the biggest dual I ever wrestle in, and I definitely will not forget that. It was an absolute experience."

Despite the final score, there were moments of triumph for Wyoming. Novak, wrestling at 197 pounds, secured a major decision victory against No. 8 Connor Mirasola with a score of 10-2. Also, No. 8 Christian Carroll (HWT) finished the dual strong, defeating No. 9 Cole Mirasola with a 10-4 decision. These wins were a testament to their skill and determination.

Novak's record now stands at 7-2 for the season, with an impressive four ranked wins. Carroll's record is 7-3, also boasting four ranked wins, including three victories against top-10 opponents.

But here's where it gets controversial... The rest of the dual presented a tough challenge for the Cowboys. Brothers Luke and Gabe Willochell showed promise early in their matches with initial takedowns, but ultimately lost via fall. Luke Willochell fell to No. 5 Marcus Blaze, and Gabe Willochell was defeated by No. 1 Shayne Van Ness. John Alden also stirred up the crowd, narrowing the gap with a second-period takedown, but he eventually lost by decision, 11-4.

The competition was fierce, as Penn State had the top-ranked wrestler in half of the weight classes, with four others ranked in the top 10.

Wyoming's wrestling team is set to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions on December 21st at the Reno Events Center.
