Brrr! Cold Snap Causes School Closures in Northeast Ohio

The Northeast Ohio region is bracing for a chilly blast, with temperatures set to plummet and wind chills dropping to dangerous levels. Schools across the area are already canceling classes for Friday, January 23, 2026, as the cold snap takes hold.

School Closures and Delays

A Familiar Tale

On Tuesday, more than 400 school districts, including Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Akron Public Schools, canceled classes due to the freezing temperatures. It seems like a familiar story, but the cold snap is here to stay, with temperatures remaining well below average for at least the next week.

  • Thursday: Colder with isolated lake effect snow showers. High: 26º
  • Friday: Isolated Lake effect snow showers with dropping temperatures and sub-zero chills. High: 8º
  • Saturday: Brutal cold and sub-zero chills. High: 9º
  • Sunday: A winter storm is looking more likely, with heavy snow and wind. High: 17º
  • Monday: Snow showers are possible, and it will be frigid. High: 16º
  • Tuesday: Partly sunny and a touch warmer. High: 17º
