In the lead-up to the 2027 presidential elections, a bold assurance has been made by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. He confidently stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can rest easy, knowing he has strong support in Rivers State as he awaits the election results.
Wike emphasized that neither he nor his supporters would be swayed or pushed aside when it comes to backing President Tinubu's bid for a second term in office. "These are the foot soldiers of the Renewed Hope Family. If there is one state where the President can truly sleep soundly, it is Rivers State," he asserted passionately.
During a visit to Port Harcourt City Local Government Area to express gratitude to his supporters from both the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, Wike reminisced about the critical role Rivers State played in the 2023 elections. He recalled how the people stood by him and voted for Tinubu despite facing considerable challenges.
"Now that the benefits of that decision are starting to materialize, I will not allow anyone to swoop in at the last minute to claim credit," he insisted. Wike highlighted that his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda began long before others joined the cause. "In 2023, we were at the forefront of this movement, and we made the choice to support Tinubu from the very start. Now, those who weren't part of that journey—who backed Atiku Abubakar and failed to secure even a small percentage of votes—are suddenly trying to lead the Renewed Hope Agenda. Can that really happen?"
He further illustrated his point with a metaphor, stating, "You weren't there at the beginning. You didn't contribute to the preparations; you weren't involved in gathering the essentials. Now that the meal is ready, you want to be the first to eat. Is that fair? No one in this state can push us out."
Wike also addressed potential distractions, urging his supporters to stay united and focused on ensuring Tinubu’s reelection. He clarified that his current visit was not only a gesture of thanks for past support but also a call to continue collaborating for the betterment of the state, assuring them that 2026 would surpass the achievements of 2025.
Earlier in the event, Sir Allwell Ihunda, the Mayor of Port Harcourt, praised Tinubu for his commitment to maintaining democratically elected council leaders in the region. Ihunda reflected on Wike's impactful eight-year governorship, which saw a multitude of projects aimed at improving the lives of residents.
"We are prepared to follow your guidance regarding plans for 2027. Once we receive direction, we will mobilize immediately," he pledged.
Additionally, Mrs. Blessing Amadi, representing the Port Harcourt II Federal Constituency, expressed her appreciation for Wike's efforts in elevating women’s representation in local government, noting, "This state stands out as the only one in the country that has granted such significant recognition to women, and we commend you for this achievement."
Mr. Smart Adoki, another representative from Port Harcourt II in the State Assembly, joined in thanking Wike for his courageous decision to support Tinubu during the 2023 elections, stating that the people of Rivers are now enjoying the fruits of that choice. Adoki reaffirmed his loyalty to Wike, believing that he still has much more to offer to the populace.
