Team GB's Medal Hunt: Unlocking Olympic Glory in Milan-Cortina 2026 (2026)

Team GB is gearing up for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, with a bold goal of breaking their own record for the most medals won at a single Winter Games. This ambitious target of eight medals is a significant leap from their previous best of five, achieved in Sochi and Pyeongchang. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 affected Beijing Games, where they secured only two curling medals, Team GB is confident in their ability to excel in Italy.

Dr. Kate Baker, Director of Performance and People at UK Sport, expressed optimism, stating, "We are in the strongest position we've ever been going into a Games from a world championship performance perspective." She highlighted the nation's love affair with winter sports, citing iconic moments like Torvill and Dean, the Stone of Destiny, and popular shows like Ski Sunday and Dancing on Ice. UK Sport has set a medal target of four to eight from the Winter Olympics and two to five from the Paralympic Winter Games, with Baker emphasizing that the "dead centre of that range" will represent the greatest Olympic performance ever seen at a Winter Games.

Team GB's medal hopes are well-founded, with standout athletes like Mia Brookes (snowboard slopestyle world champion), Zoe Atkin (freeski halfpipe world champion), Kirsty Muir (freeski slopestyle and big air), and Charlotte Bankes (snowboard cross) all in strong contention. Additionally, the men's skeleton team, led by Matt Weston and Marcus Wyatt, and the men's curling team, headed by Bruce Mouat, are favorites for gold. Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson are also aiming to win Britain's first figure skating Olympic medal since 1994.

Despite the higher risk and jeopardy associated with winter sports, Team GB's chef de mission, Eve Muirhead, is confident in their preparations. She said, "We’ve been meticulous in our preparations for Milano-Cortina 2026." Muirhead, a curling gold medalist in Beijing, understands the impact of a supportive environment at the Olympics and has focused on creating conditions that allow athletes to perform at their best. With a credible force across more disciplines than ever before, Team GB is poised to make a significant impact in Italy, capturing the hearts and minds of the British public.
