Penguins Prospects Shine in AHL and WHL: Dach and Hayes Earn Weekly Honors (2026)

Our future stars are shining bright! It seems the Pittsburgh Penguins' prospect pool is brimming with talent, as multiple young players are making significant waves in their respective leagues. This is fantastic news for any hockey fan eager to see the next generation of talent rise through the ranks.

Let's talk about Kale Dach, a promising forward for the Calgary Hitmen and a seventh-round selection in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. He's been absolutely on fire, recently earning the WHL's Rookie of the Week award. How did he achieve this? By putting up an impressive six points – that's four goals and two assists – in just four games! This isn't the first time Dach has been recognized; he also snagged the WHL's December Rookie of the Month honor, where he amassed a remarkable 14 points (with eight goals and six assists) and contributed three game-winning goals over nine games. It's worth noting that his former teammate, Ben Kindel, also garnered WHL rookie accolades during his own impressive rookie season in 2023-24.

Interestingly, the initial strategy for Dach, who was the Penguins' final pick in the 2025 draft, was for him to develop alongside Kindel with the Hitmen for a season. However, Kindel's accelerated path to the NHL didn't deter Dach. He's been a consistent offensive force this WHL season, boasting 58 points (comprising 27 goals and 31 assists) in 45 games. And the exciting news doesn't stop there! Dach, who celebrated his 18th birthday in February, has committed to playing NCAA hockey next year with Penn State.

But here's where it gets really interesting: Avery Hayes is also making a name for himself! Just five days after a memorable NHL debut, Hayes was named the AHL's Player of the Week. He followed up his historic NHL debut with an extraordinary AHL hat trick in overtime! This 23-year-old forward was among the first players signed by the Penguins after Kyle Dubas took the helm in June 2023. He's been a key contributor for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, tallying 26 points (with 16 goals and 10 assists) in 32 games this season.

And this is the part most people miss... While the NHL is currently on a break, the AHL is too, pausing for the AHL All-Star Game. Representing the Penguins at this prestigious event in Rockford, Illinois, are Sergei Murashov and Tristan Broz, who will be participating on Tuesday and Wednesday.

What are your thoughts on these emerging talents? Do you believe Dach and Hayes have what it takes to become consistent NHL players? Let us know in the comments below!
