In a striking display of urban oversight, the persistent flashing lights along a busy thoroughfare in Queens, New York, have ignited frustration among local residents. For several weeks, these strobing lights, managed by the city, have not only distracted drivers but also disturbed the peace for those living nearby—prompting action only after the issue gained attention on social media.
Concerns about the incessant blinking lights on the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk, situated along the Shore Front Parkway, date back to at least December 29. Fortunately, after much delay, the flashing ceased on a recent Sunday night due to temporary repairs implemented by the Department of Transportation (DOT). However, the agency continues to work on more permanent fixes, acknowledging that the flickering was a result of damage to the electrical cables. Despite inquiries, the DOT has not responded to requests for information regarding how long they had been aware of this issue or when they anticipate completing the necessary repairs.
Residents near the boardwalk have voiced their discontent over the prolonged delay in addressing these malfunctioning lights, emphasizing that this negligence creates a safety hazard for both distracted motorists and local residents who enjoy evening walks along the boardwalk.
Edward Pastore, a long-time resident of Rockaway Beach, emphasized the necessity of proper lighting for security, especially during the darker winter months. "When it gets really dark, people still want to walk," he explained, pointing out that the lack of timely repairs has become a common complaint in the area. "This is a regular occurrence in Rockaway; issues often remain unresolved for far too long. It seems that once winter hits, there’s less urgency to address these matters."
Adding her perspective, Marian Brewer, a 49-year-old barista at Rockaway Roasters, expressed frustration over the apparent lack of proactive measures from city officials. "I live right on the boardwalk and witness everything that happens here. They are clearly not managing these issues effectively; if they were, we wouldn’t be facing repeated problems like this."
The NYC Parks Department, responsible for the maintenance of the boardwalk, was informed about the defective lighting at the end of December, while utility company PSEG conducted an inspection of the situation on January 13, as per updates from city councilmember Joann Ariola’s office. After confirming that their equipment was functioning properly, PSEG reached out to the DOT, which bears the responsibility for maintaining streetlights throughout the city.
A video that has since gone viral, shared by a WNYC reporter on January 16, brought additional attention to the situation—weeks after the erratic light show began. Just two days later, social media updates confirmed that the DOT's temporary solutions had effectively halted the flashing. One such update expressed gratitude to the individuals involved in resolving the problem, stating, "Thank you to whatever hardworking people figured out how to fix them."
However, not all residents found humor in the prolonged light display. Councilmember Ariola criticized the agencies involved, stating, "These organizations engaged in an ineffective game of volleyball, passing the responsibility back and forth, eventually involving PSEG, even though this was clearly a DOT issue from the outset."
According to a review of city data by The Post, the DOT has received approximately 90 complaints related to streetlights in the vicinity of the boardwalk since 2020. While the majority of these are typically resolved within a matter of days, one recent complaint took nearly a month to address. The latest complaint, made on October 15 regarding a damaged lamppost on Beach 98th Street, is still awaiting resolution.
"I hope that with the new commissioner in place, the DOT will finally start taking accountability and recognize their responsibilities," Ariola remarked. "The situation on the boardwalk was unacceptable; it shouldn't take a call from a city councilmember to spur action. We all deserve better, and I appreciate the community’s patience throughout this ordeal."
