Life in Retirement: My 25-Year Journey as a Health Study Participant (2026)

Imagine dedicating a quarter-century of your life to a cause that could save countless others. That’s exactly what I, along with 55,000 fellow Albertans, have been doing for the past 25 years as part of the Alberta Tomorrow Project (ATP). But here’s where it gets truly inspiring: this isn’t just any study—it’s a 50-year commitment to unravel the mysteries behind cancer and chronic diseases, and we’re only halfway through. Yet, the discoveries already made are nothing short of groundbreaking.

ATP recently hosted a Town Hall event titled ‘Preventing Cancer Together – How Your Data is Driving Discoveries,’ and the numbers are staggering. Over 11 billion data points have been collected since 1999—each one a piece of the puzzle, from survey responses to lab results derived from blood, saliva, urine, and stool samples. And this is the part most people miss: these data points aren’t just numbers; they’re stories, habits, and lifestyles that could reshape how we understand and prevent diseases.

I joined ATP at its inception, motivated by a deeply personal loss. Just after a mammogram appointment, I saw a poster calling for volunteers. Having lost my mother to breast cancer the previous year, I felt compelled to contribute in her memory. One of ATP’s findings hit close to home: women who breastfed longer were less likely to experience early menopause, a condition linked to higher risks of breast and ovarian cancers. Given that breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women, this insight could be a game-changer.

But here’s where it gets controversial: while some findings, like the link between oral microbes and colon cancer risk, or the protective effects of fruits and vegetables against processed meats, seem straightforward, others challenge conventional wisdom. For instance, how much of our health is truly within our control, and where does genetics draw the line? These questions spark debates that ATP doesn’t shy away from.

Beyond cancer, ATP’s reach extends to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mental health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alberta government turned to ATP for critical data. Over 4,000 participants, including myself, provided blood samples across four time periods to inform public health decisions. Each time I rolled up my sleeve, I hoped these samples would contribute to solutions. And they did—real science, driven by real people, led to real vaccines.

Participating in ATP isn’t demanding. Every year or two, I complete surveys focusing on preventative lifestyle choices—diet, fitness, stress, and mental health. Occasionally, I’ve joined more intensive studies, like the COVID-19 Antibody Testing. Here’s the bold truth: for such monumental results, the ask is remarkably small. Yet, the impact is immeasurable.

As I reflect on my tiny role in this massive project, I’m filled with pride and gratitude. To the volunteers, doctors, researchers, and everyone in between—thank you. Your dedication to thinking about tomorrow is shaping a healthier future for all of us. Let’s keep the momentum going.

Thought-provoking question for you: If you could contribute to a study that might save lives, even if it meant sharing deeply personal data, would you? Why or why not? Share your thoughts in the comments—let’s spark a conversation!
