Modern languages, history of art, classics, and music are among the 'easier' paths to an Oxbridge offer. With the growing trend of STEM subjects, humanities courses are becoming more accessible. Asian and Middle Eastern studies, and linguistics, are also offering higher chances.
But here's where it gets controversial... Courses like computer science, mathematics, and biomedical sciences are becoming increasingly difficult to crack. Economics and law courses have seen offer rates plummet to as low as 6% and 10%, respectively.
And this is the part most people miss... It's not just about the subject. The college you choose can also impact your chances. Analysis reveals huge variations, with offer rates ranging from 10% to 42% depending on the college.
For example, Oxford's Magdalen College, with its rich history dating back to 1458, received over 1,200 applications for just 129 places in 2024. On the other hand, Cambridge's Murray Edwards College, established in 1954, has become more accessible with a 42% success rate due to an expansion of places.
So, what are the best odds? A degree in modern and medieval languages tops the list, with a 70% chance of success at Cambridge. This involves studying two modern languages or even delving into classical Greek or Latin.
But wait, there's more! Classics and Anglo-Saxon Norse and Celtic degrees offer almost equal chances, with 68% and 65% success rates, respectively.
At Oxford, European and Middle Eastern languages take the lead with a 50% offer rate.
However, it's not all about the popular choices. Less sought-after languages and unusual joint honours can work in your favor.
Tom Moon, head of consultancy at Oxbridge Applications, warns against applying for a course you're not passionate about just to increase your chances.
He says, "A student at Oxford or Cambridge works harder than ever before. If they're studying a subject they don't care about, they're likely to have a miserable time."

Ariana Azad, founder of Figtree Learning, advises students to consider the academic fit. She says, "Offer-rate data is useful, but applying to an 'easier' course can backfire if it's not a genuine interest. Admissions tutors are experts at spotting tactical applications."
Vicky Orsmond, senior progression lead at Hereford Sixth Form College, commends Oxbridge for their transparency but expresses concern that it might deter state school students from applying.
She adds, "It's a fine line. Students might think, 'I'll never get into Magdalen, so why bother applying?' I always encourage my students to apply to the college they want. The key is to ensure our students don't overlap on the same course at the same college."
