A volunteer firefighter's home goes up in flames while he bravely battles the devastating bushfires in Victoria. This story is a heart-wrenching reminder of the sacrifices made by our firefighters.
Michael Harper, a dedicated volunteer, had been tirelessly fighting fires in central Victoria for over 24 hours when he received the devastating news. While battling a blaze on Maroondah Highway, he learned that his home in Alexandra was under threat from the Longwood fire.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Despite the personal tragedy, Michael's commitment to his duty never wavered. He and his team, including a young volunteer and the Murrindindi Shire Council Mayor, Damien Gallagher, sprang into action. They had just checked on Cr Gallagher's house, ensuring it was safe, when they heard the news about Michael's property.
"Once we realized Damien's house was secure, we heard over the radio that my home was in danger. It was a gut-wrenching moment, but I knew I had to stay focused," Michael shared.
As they arrived back in Alexandra, Michael's composure was admirable. He jumped out of the truck, speechless, and started providing support to the additional crew who had arrived. His resilience and dedication were inspiring.
"He simply said, 'It is what it is. I can't change it, so we move forward.' His attitude was incredible," Cr Gallagher recalled.
And this is the part most people miss...
Michael's story is a testament to the strength and selflessness of our volunteer firefighters. Despite the loss of his home, he chose to continue fighting, understanding the greater good. He and his team had been defending fires in Ruffy and Terip Terip, and then between Yarck and Merton, battling intense blazes.
"We were doing our best, but it felt like putting a bandaid on a brain injury. The fire on Maroondah was relentless," Michael explained.
Cr Gallagher praised Michael's unwavering spirit, "He had already done so much, but when we were down to a crew of two, he knew we had to keep going. Michael's determination is unmatched."
Michael's wife, Cathie, also an Acheron CFA volunteer, shared their mindset, "We knew we couldn't be there to defend our home. It's part of the job, and we accept that."
So, what does this mean for our volunteer firefighters?
Michael's story highlights the incredible dedication and resilience of our volunteers. Despite personal losses, they continue to protect our communities. Cr Gallagher emphasized, "Michael's story is just one of many. These volunteers are heroes, and their selflessness is inspiring."
