The ECCC's Prairie and Arctic Storm Prediction Centre has described this as a "potentially explosive day, severe weather-wise." The center highlights the unusual MLCAPE values of 3000+ J/KG, which are nearly unheard of in Alberta. This indicates a rare and intense weather pattern.
The focus is on the development of the SFC low, as the tornadic potential is expected to be maximized in the NE quadrant. The critical intersection of a dryline and cold front will determine the strength and number of tornadoes. NWP guidance suggests that this feature is gradually moving north and west, positioning itself near Edmonton.
The ECCC emphasizes the need for close monitoring throughout the day. Any storms forming in this environment are likely to be dangerous, and the pattern has historically been linked to long-track, tornadic supercells.
An extreme-risk zone is identified just east of Edmonton, extending towards the Saskatchewan border. The situation is equally concerning in a high-risk zone surrounding Edmonton, Spruce Grove, St. Albert, Leduc, Devon, and Drayton Valley, where wind gusts can reach 120 km/h, hailstones up to 6 cm, and a tornado risk are anticipated.
The risks persist into the overnight hours, with a minor risk for most of the province on Sunday. However, Lloydminster is under a moderate risk, with potential wind gusts of 70 km/h, hail up to 2 cm, and 30 mm of rainfall.
